Writer Olzhobai Shakir released from custody

The Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan changed the sentences of lower courts in the case against a writer Olzhobai Shakir. His lawyer Baktybek Avtandil uulu told 24.kg news agency.

According to him, the writer was placed on probation for three years and released from custody. The hearing was held today, October 8, the decision of the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic comes into force from the day it is announced.

Earlier, the Alamedin District Court sentenced the writer to five years in prison on charges of calling for mass riots, and the Chui Regional Court upheld the decision of the first instance.

Olzhobai Shakir was detained on August 2023 and has been in custody since then. He is accused of calls for active disobedience to law enforcement officers and mass riots. On the eve of his arrest, the writer spoke out against transfer of four resorts in Issyk-Kul region to Uzbekistan.
