Authorities not going to rehabilitate fugitive president Kurmanbek Bakiyev

The authorities of Kyrgyzstan are not going to rehabilitate the fugitive president Kurmanbek Bakiyev. The head of the Information Policy Service of the Presidential Executive Office, Daiyrbek Orunbekov, posted on Facebook.

He commented on the construction of a garment factory by Kurmanbek Bakiyev for the families of those killed in the April 2010 events.

«The authorities have repeatedly stated that if Kurmanbek Bakiyev arrives in Kyrgyzstan, he will be immediately arrested. There are no attempts to rehabilitate him. The construction of the factory is a result of personal negotiations between Bakiyev and 217 citizens, who lost their loved ones during the April revolution. The state only fulfilled the request of the April revolution participants, who said: «we found the funds, allocate the land,» Daiyrbek Orunbekov posted.

He also added that within six months it will become clear whether the Bakiyevs’ promises will be fulfilled. «If they do not build a factory and do not fulfill their promises, the state will take the land back,» Orunbekov posts.

Earlier, participants of the April revolution and their relatives opposed the return of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, overthrown in 2010, to Kyrgyzstan.

Chairman of the public organization April Bairagy Konushbek Dolotaliev noted that incorrect information is being spread that the ousted president will build a factory for the participants in the April events.

«There are talks that the joint stock company 7 April Intymagy has been created and includes 700 people. Bakiyev allegedly promised to build a factory for 1 billion soms, and the families of the victims would work there. The parents of the victims and participants of those events are registered with us, and not one of them has asked or will ask for Bakiyev’s return. We are against the construction of the factory and the rehabilitation of the fugitive president,» Konushbek Dolotaliev said.

In his interview, President Sadyr Japarov confirmed that more than one hectare of land has been allocated to 7 April Yntymagy for the construction of an enterprise that will provide jobs for 200 people, and that those affected by the April events and their relatives will work there.

In 2023, Sadyr Japarov received an appeal on behalf of the head of Aikol Taza Koom NGO Usupbiy Sherimbaev. In the letter, on behalf of the victims of the April events, widows and orphans, he asked for monetary compensation from Kurmanbek Bakiyev.

After this appeal, participants of the April revolution held rallies several times and demanded the arrest of the overthrown president.
