UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres went on a tour of the countries of Central Asia. The organization’s website says.
He will reportedly visit Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Antonio Guterres visited the region in 2017.
According to his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, in each country the Secretary-General will meet with the president and other senior government officials, as well as get acquainted with projects related to the fight against climate change and talk with local activists.
The first stop of the tour is Tashkent.
The Secretary-General will take part in the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization on July 4 in Astana. In his speech, Antonio Guterres will remind forum participants of the need to reaffirm their commitment to the principles of multilateralism based on the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The UN Secretary-General also intends to warn the international community that geopolitical differences do not allow to effectively eliminate common threats, including the fight against climate change.
