Deputy proposes to rehabilitate victims of political repression

Kyrgyzstan lags behind neighboring countries in term of rehabilitation of victims of political repression. Deputy Zhanar Akaev announced at a meeting of the parliamentary committee on social policy.

He presented in the first reading a bill that provides for amendments to the laws «On the rights and guarantees of rehabilitated citizens who suffered as a result of repression for political and religious beliefs, on social, national and other grounds», «On the National Archive Fund of the Kyrgyz Republic».

Zhanar Akaev, citing historians, noted that about 40,000 residents of the republic were repressed during Soviet times.

«Our ancestors were shot dead, they were sent into exile, they were arrested and imprisoned. Our mission is to carry out political rehabilitation. We are far behind other Central Asian states on this issue. In Uzbekistan, a special commission was created by presidential decree. As a result of its work, the victims of repression were acquitted. About 360,000 people were acquitted in Kazakhstan. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev attracted 400 researchers for this and personally allocated money from the budget. He allocates about $3 million a year,» he said.
