UNESCO hosted the first global meeting of education ministers to explore the opportunities, challenges and risks associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI), including ChatGPT application, in school and university education. UN News reports.
It is noted that more than 40 ministers shared their approaches to the problem of using AI and their views on how best to integrate this tool into educational systems.
«Generative artificial intelligence opens up new horizons, but at the same time brings new challenges. We need to take urgent action to integrate new technologies into educational systems on our own terms. It is our duty to prioritize safety, inclusiveness, diversity, transparency and quality,» said UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education Stefania Giannini.
A new UNESCO global study of more than 450 schools and universities found that less than 10 percent of educational institutions have developed an institutional policy or formal guidance on the use of generative AI applications. The results show that development of an immediate response to the sudden emergence of applications capable of creating written and visual works is a challenge for educational institutions.
The results of the study revealed the primary role that teachers play in a new era for the field of education, however, methodological guidance and training are needed to solve the problems that the teachers are facing.
