Deputy proposes to sterilize stray animals instead of shooting them

It is proposed to sterilize/spay stray animals, rather than shoot them in Kyrgyzstan. This norm is provided for by the draft law on the responsible treatment of animals, which was submitted for public discussion.

According to the initiator of the document, deputy Dastan Bekeshev, reduction of the population of neglected animals by shooting is not only inhumane, but also ineffective.

At least 240 soms were spent in 2021 on shooting one dog from the budget in the cities of Kyrgyzstan, and it was already 302 soms in the first half of 2022.

Statistics for the last six years show that the number of stray dogs is only increasing from year to year, as is the budget for their shooting. Sterilization / spaying gives a guaranteed result. Every year the dog population will only decrease, and, accordingly, the budget will go down.

«According to the calculations, it will be necessary to spend 6.12 million soms per year to sterilize 1,000 dogs, and 22 million soms — to sterilize and vaccinate 10,000 dogs. But if this method is used, these expenses will decrease over time,» the background statement says.

The bill regulates the creation of shelters and the maintenance of stray animals.

The same document proposes to ban eating cats and dogs, using animals for circus performances and keeping them in petting zoos.

Shooting of stray dogs was abandoned in Kant town in March 2022 and their vaccination, sterilization and chipping began.
