Kyrgyzstan marks World Prematurity Day

The World Prematurity Day was celebrated at the Center for Maternal and Childhood Welfare. Press center of the Ministry of Health of Kyrgyzstan reported.

According to it, the date was approved in 2009 at the initiative of the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI).

Every year, 6-8 percent of children are born prematurely in the world, about 10,000-12,000 babies are born prematurely every year in Kyrgyzstan.

In 2004, Kyrgyzstan completely switched to the criteria for registration of newborns recommended by WHO, according to which newborns born after the 22nd week of pregnancy with a body weight of more than 500 grams are registered.

«The parents of such children need not only high-quality treatment for their babies and financial support, they also urgently need psychological help — not only from medical workers, but from our entire community. The knowledge that prematurity is not a death verdict, and a huge number of premature newborns have grown up not only healthy, but also outstanding people, is very important,» the ministry noted.
