WHO does not recommend mass vaccination against monkeypox

WHO does not recommend mass vaccination against monkeypox. The Republican Headquarters for the fight against coronavirus reported.

According to it, there are antiviral drugs and vaccines approved to fight monkeypox, but their supplies are limited. WHO is developing a mechanism for their fair distribution.

In the few places where vaccines are available, they are used primarily to protect healthcare workers and laboratory workers.

Post-exposure vaccination, ideally within four days of exposure, may be considered by some countries.

To date, monkeypox is spreading in the countries where it did not exist before.

However, it has been circulating in Africa for a long time, where more than 1,400 suspected cases of the disease and 66 deaths have been registered this year alone.

«This virus has been circulating and killing in Africa for decades. It’s an unfortunate reflection of the world we live in that the international community is only now paying attention to monkeypox because it has appeared in high-income countries,» WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus said.

In July, WHO declared the monkeypox outbreak a global public health emergency.

Monkeypox is a rare infectious disease that occurs in remote areas of Central and West Africa. Its symptoms are nausea, fever, rash, itching, muscle pain.
