Poverty level, calculated based on consumer spending, reached 25.3 percent in Kyrgyzstan in 2020, which is 5.2 percentage points higher compared to the previous year. Results of the study conducted by the National Statistical Committee say.
According to it, the 2019 poverty line was used as a threshold to assess the level of poverty. The cost value of the general poverty line in 2020 was 35,268 soms per capita per year, the extreme poverty — 19,774 soms.
The poverty level in rural areas grew by 6.1 percentage points, and in urban areas — by 3.6 percent. At least 1,678,000 people lived below the poverty line in 2020, some 73.7 percent of them were residents of rural settlements.
Poverty reduction in 2020, compared to the previous year, was registered only in Osh city (by 6 percent) and in Talas region (by 0.8 percentage points).
