Former president of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev does not testify on any of the acts he is charged with. His lawyer Sergey Slesarev told 24.kg news agency.
According to the lawyer, his client believes that all this is illegal and he does not consider it necessary to give any evidence. Officially, only one charge was brought against his client — within the case on the release of the crime boss Aziz Batukaev.
Preliminary hearings will begin on October 11. «But the investigation convincingly proved neither the scheme of the conspiracy of high-ranking officials, nor, actually, why Almazbek Atambayev is a defendant under the Articles «Corruption» and «Complicity in crime.» Moreover, how can investigators unequivocally assert that Batukaev has no leukemia? Where is the expert opinion on this? There is only evidence that, at the time of his release, Batukaev had this disease, where is the evidence of the contrary? The investigation was carried out very superficially,» said Sergey Slesarev.
The indictments, besides Atambayev, were handed to Indira Dzholdubaeva, Kalybek Kachkynaliev and Abdukhalim Raimzhanov.
The case on illegal release of the kingpin Aziz Batukaev was resumed in January 2019. The accused are doctors and laboratory assistants, who diagnosed the crime boss with cancer. In addition, former officials and deputies are also involved in the case.
Earlier, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that Almazbek Atambayev’s direct involvement in the release of the kingpin was found out. The former president was a witness in the case. On August 9, he was charged with corruption within the case.
Almazbek Atambayev is accused of particularly serious crimes — violence against law enforcement agencies, murder, hostage taking, riots, corruption. He will be kept in the SCNS pre-trial detention center until October 26.
