Atambayev’s case. Lawyers intend to seek justice in the Hague court

Almazbek Atambayev’s lawyer intends to appeal to international courts to release the former president of Kyrgyzstan. The lawyer Sergey Slesarev, who represents his interests, told reporters.

According to the lawyer, Almazbek Atambayev does not agree with the charges against him. The former head of state believes that they are contrary to the Constitution.

As Sergey Slesarev notes, the defense is trying to resolve the situation by their own efforts using internal laws, but the impartiality of the court in the country raises questions.

«I saw the impact on citizens. Therefore, it is possible that we will appeal to international courts to resolve the conflict,» said Sergey Slesarev. In particular, solutions to the conflict can also be sought through the Hague court.

On August 7, the special forces of the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan attempted to storm Almazbek Atambayev’s residence in Koi-Tash village. The storm failed twice. About 45 people were injured during the riots; the Deputy Commander of Alpha special forces died from a gunshot wound.

On August 8, special units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs carried out special operation to detain the former president Atambayev. All roads to Koi-Tash were blocked, communication was jammed, access to the Internet was blocked. At least 3,000 police officers and special machinery were pulled in to the epicenter. After a two-hour confrontation, the police managed to force the situation — Almazbek Atambayev decided to surrender. He was taken to the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan for interrogation. He is detained.

Almazbek Atambayev has been preliminary charged, but it is not yet known under which articles of the Criminal Code. It is expected that the court will make a decision on changing the preventive measure to the former president in the near future.
