Ata Meken to hold rally in support of political prisoners

Members of Ata Meken party and deputies of the parliamentary faction of the Socialists will hold a rally in support of political prisoners. The leader of the faction Almambet Shykmamatov told 24.kg news agency.

According to him, they will hold the protest on April 23 at the Supreme Court building on Old Square.

«We will demand an objective and unbiased review of the criminal case against the head of the party Omurbek Tekebayev and the former minister of emergency situations Duishenkul Chotonov without a political background. We will appeal with a similar requirement to the court on case against ex-deputy Sadyr Japarov. These politicians were convicted illegally, and the court showed a real arbitrariness against them, executed an order from above. They should be acquitted and released with apologies,» said Almambet Shykmamatov.

They chose April 23 for the rally, because on this day the Supreme Court has to accept the criminal case of Omurbek Tekebayev for review.

Omurbek Tekebayev and Duishenkul Chotonov were sentenced to eight years in prison with confiscation of property. Courts of all instances found them guilty of corruption.

In November, the Tverskoy Court of Moscow arrested the former deputy of the State Duma, the main witness in the case against Tekebayev and Chotonov, a businessman Leonid Maevsky. He was accused of extorting $ 37.5 million for non-proliferation of defamatory information. Leonid Maevsky faces up to 15 years in prison. In this regard, the defendants also intend to insist on the speedy review of their case.
