Prime Minister opens new irrigation canal in Jalal-Abad region

The Prime Minister Sooronbay Jeenbekov opened a new irrigation canal Kelechek with a length of 5.3 kilometers in Nooken district of Jalal-Abad region. The Information Support Department of the government’s executive office reported.

It is noted that the opening of the canal will improve irrigation on 1,379 hectares of land. In the future, another 1,025 hectares of irrigated land can be additionally covered. The loss of water will be reduced to 1, 993 million cubic meters per year.

The Prime Minister stressed that a number of irrigation facilities are being prepared for commissioning this year. The day before, the government approved the State Program for the Development of Irrigation in Kyrgyzstan for 2017–2026.

«The program will allow to introduce 65,500 hectares of new land in allocation of 58.8 billion soms, to increase water availability at 51,600 hectares, transfer 9,500 hectares from machine irrigation to a gravity one, and improve land-reclamation condition of 50,000 hectares. About 242,700 new jobs will be created through distribution of new irrigated land. This program for the Jalal-Abad region includes seven facilities worth 13.5 billion soms," the Prime Minister said.
