First Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan, Azamat Mambetov, said at a meeting of the Committee on Fuel and Energy Complex, Subsoil Use and Industrial Policy of the Parliament that the tailing dumps in Mailuu-Suu have been reclaimed and now the radiation background there is lower than in Bishkek.
«Now if you stand with a dosimeter right at the tailing dump, it will show the radiation level of 0.16 micro-roentgen per hour, while the level of natural radiation in the capital is 0.22 micro-roentgen per hour,» he said.
The deputy minister explained to the deputies that engineering structures are installed over the tailing dumps and a layer of soil is piled on top. The dams over the tailing ponds, installed in Soviet times, have fallen into disrepair due to earthquakes.
