Russia to finance reclamation of tailing dumps in 5 more villages in Kyrgyzstan

The Russian government will provide 2,141,420 billion rubles for the reclamation of tailing dumps left in Kyrgyzstan from uranium mining and production during the Soviet era. First Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations, Azamat Mambetov, announced at a meeting of the Committee on Fuel and Energy Complex, Subsoil Use and Industrial Policy of the Parliament.

According to him, the Russian government previously allocated money for the reclamation of tailings dumps in Kadzhi-Sai and Min-Kush. This work has already been completed.

Now, according to the deputy minister, the following sites are being reclaimed:

  • A tailings dump, adit and mine in the village of Kadzhi-Sai in Issyk-Kul region;
  • A tailings dump in Nookat district of Osh region;
  • Three tailing dumps in Kyzyl-Zhar village in Jalal-Abad region;
  • Three toxic tailing dumps in Sumsar village in Jalal-Abad region;
  • Two toxic tailing dumps in Kann village in Batken region.

Rosatom is engaged in the rehabilitation of lands in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan within the framework of the interstate target program signed in 2012 «Reclamation of the territories of states affected by uranium mining industries». It ended in 2024. Now reclamation work continues within the framework of new intergovernmental agreements.

In 2019, work was completed on the conservation of the tailings dump near the village of Kadzhi-Sai, Kak tailing dump was rehabilitated in 2023, and the tailing dump Taldy-Bulak was liquidated. Last year, the tailing dump Tuyuk-Suu was sealed and liquidated. The last four facilities were located near Min-Kush village.
