PMs of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan discuss increase in trade turnover

Kyrgyzstan intends to restore trade and economic ties with Tajikistan. The Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers — Head of the Presidential Administration of the Kyrgyz Republic, Adylbek Kasymaliev, said during a meeting with the Prime Minister of Tajikistan Kohir Rasulzoda.

As the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers reported, during the meeting in a narrow format, the parties paid special attention to the prospects for the development of trade and economic ties. They outlined a common goal of increasing trade turnover between the countries to $500 million by 2030.

It is worth noting that in 2020, before the conflict on the border with Tajikistan, trade turnover between the two countries was $37 million. Over three years, these figures have decreased, and in 2023, trade turnover amounted to $12 million. An increase of 13.5 percent was registered in 2024.

During the extended talks, Adylbek Kasymaliev emphasized the commitment of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic to continuing active joint work with the Government of Tajikistan to deepen bilateral relations and expand economic cooperation. The parties discussed the possibility of establishing an Intergovernmental Council chaired by the heads of government of the two countries.

One of the main topics discussed was preparation for the upcoming trilateral meeting of the Presidents of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, scheduled to take place in the city of Khujand.

Following the signing of the agreement on clarifying the borders between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan Edil Baisalov announced that the first-ever trilateral summit with the participation of the Presidents of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan would be held on March 31 in Khujand. The official noted that the leaders of the three countries would discuss key areas of cooperation aimed at ensuring security, stability, and prosperity in Central Asia.
