Japarov congratulates head of Uzbekistan on successful holding of referendum

A telephone conversation took place on May 1 between the Presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Sadyr Japarov congratulated Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the successful holding of the constitutional referendum.

He expressed confidence that the constitutional reform being carried out by the leader of the neighboring republic, as well as the course taken to implement new ideas and principles for the further development of the country, also contribute to strengthening the image of friendly Uzbekistan in world politics.

Sadyr Japarov stressed that a high level of comprehensive strategic partnership has been established between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, as well as constructive and trusting dialogue at all levels based on fraternal, friendly and good neighborly relations. Work continues in full measure to implement the agreements reached between the parties in accordance with the adopted joint roadmap.

During the conversation, the presidents also exchanged views on the schedule of upcoming events in bilateral and multilateral formats.

On April 30, a referendum was held in Uzbekistan on a new version of the Constitution. Amendments to the document provide for strengthening the social protection of the population, abolition of the death penalty and extension of the term of office of the head of state. Voters could approve or oppose only the entire package of amendments as a whole.

Previously, it was possible to be elected the president of Uzbekistan twice for five years, it is proposed to extend these terms to seven years, respectively. The amendments will allow incumbent leader Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who has been in office since 2016, to remain in power until 2040.

At least 90.21 percent of voters voted for the new version of the Constitution of Uzbekistan, 9.35 percent voted against.
