Rosselkhoznadzor held talks with Marat Asypbekov, Deputy Director of the Department of Chemicalization, Plant Protection and Quarantine of the Ministry of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan. Website of the organization reports.
The parties discussed development of steps to prevent attempts to import Kyrgyzstan’s genetically modified seed material into Russia. Previously, GMOs were detected in corn seeds from Kyrgyzstan with a volume of 14.2 tons.
Rosselkhoznadzor states: there were no documents confirming the varietal and sowing qualities of the seed material.
The label on the bags contained incomplete information. In addition, the product was imported accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate issued by the competent authority of Kyrgyzstan, in which the information did not match the data of transport documents.
In accordance with federal legislation on seed production in Russia, the import and production of GMО seeds is prohibited, except for research purposes. Rosselkhoznadzor emphasized that now it is necessary to establish the place of origin of seed products as soon as possible and determine the initial source of raw materials for the production of genetically modified seeds.
«Marat Asypbekov said that the department would promptly investigate the causes of the incident and would send comprehensive information to the service,» the statement says.
