Mass arrests: Toktaiym Umetaliyeva asks to release women from custody

Women accused of attempt to organize riots in order to seize power must be released. Human rights activist Toktaiym Umetaliyeva stated at a press conference at 24.kg news agency.

According to her, the state should be built on the principles of women’s security.

«President Sadyr Japarov once again confirmed that he does not interfere in the judicial system. He and his wife went through difficult days in their lives. The proof of this is the release of the former head of state Almazbek Atambayev. Shortly before of two national holidays, February 23 and March 8, I ask you to release the women involved in Kempir-Abad reservoir case. The foundation of any family is the mother and wife. Dozens of mothers want our compatriots to be released from custody. There is every reason for this — a permanent place of residence, a place of work. They have to defend themselves from home,» Toktaiym Umetaliyeva said.

The human rights activist added that the whole world united around Turkey, where the earthquake occurred. Now, according to her, unity is also needed in our country.

«We really need stability right now. The legal responsibility for the release of women involved in the Kempir-Abad case lies with the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Supreme Court. In particular, the Supreme Court is obliged to respect the rights of our women and release them,» she said.

The Committee for protection of Kempir-Abad reservoir was created on October 22. It includes activists, politicians and MPs. On the same day, in an interview with Kabar news agency, President Sadyr Japarov said: the authorities have information who was behind the rallies and marches on Kempir-Abad issue.

Mass arrests began on October 23. Authorities placed 26 people in jail on charges of preparing for riots.

A number of international human rights organizations such as the International Partnership for Human Rights (IPHR), the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT), the Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC), the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (HFHR), Freedom Now and others issued a statement calling for the immediate release of politicians and activists arrested in Kyrgyzstan.
