The Ministry of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan proposes to temporarily ban the export of onions to states that are not members of the Eurasian Economic Union. The relevant amendments to the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers on imposing temporary ban on the export of certain types of agricultural products from the Kyrgyz Republic were submitted for public discussion.
As background statement says, it is proposed to impose the ban to ensure the country’s food security and stabilize market prices for onions. The ministry noted that the price of onions is currently inflated to a large extent.
«This product is socially significant, and in case of its shortage on the market, this can lead to a food crisis in the country,» the Ministry of Agriculture added.
In addition to onions, the list also includes shallots, garlic, leeks and other bulbous vegetables, fresh or refrigerated.
The Ministry of Agriculture added that Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan also imposed restrictions on the export of onions.
