Mass arrests: Azimbek Beknazarov remanded in custody until February 2023

The Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek considered a petition of the investigators to extend the measure of restraint for ex-ambassador of Kyrgyzstan to Malaysia Azimbek Beknazarov.

By a court decision, he will be kept in the remand center 1 of the capital until February 23, 2023.

After the hearing, Azimbek Beknazarov commented it to the press. He joked that they decided to release him on the day of real men — Defender of the Fatherland Day.

«I sent a letter to the Prosecutor General today, wrote that I have been in prison for 42 days and not a single prosecutor has come to me, I just sit. Yesterday I was taken out for investigation. They said to get acquainted with the decision on conducting an examination,» Azimbek Beknazarov told.

He also told about the conditions of detention in the pre-trial detention center. «They keep me in the basement, I’m sitting alone. But I want to say that there are changes. I was kept in the pre-trial detention center in Jalal-Abad, there were no such conditions. Inmates are fed three times a day,» Azimbek Beknazarov said.

The Committee for protection of Kempir-Abad reservoir was created on October 22. It includes activists, politicians and MPs. On the same day, in an interview with Kabar news agency, President Sadyr Japarov said: the authorities have information who was behind the rallies and marches on Kempir-Abad issue.

Mass arrests began on October 23. Authorities placed 26 people in jail on charges of preparing for riots.

A number of international human rights organizations such as the International Partnership for Human Rights (IPHR), the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT), the Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC), the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (HFHR), Freedom Now and others issued a statement calling for the immediate release of politicians and activists arrested in Kyrgyzstan.
