At least 44 percent of women aged 15-49 in Kyrgyzstan are overweight or obese. Such data were presented at the presentation of the results of the study «Nutritional status of children and women.»
According to the study, there is a high prevalence of obesity among children aged six months to five years (11 and 12.6 percent, respectively) in Naryn and Osh regions. The national figure is 7.3 percent.
A high prevalence of obesity among children aged five to nine years (21.1 percent compared to the national rate of 13.8 percent) is registered in Bishkek.
Obesity is often associated with non-specific inflammation and development of metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes and some cardiovascular diseases. In this regard, it is recommended to implement policies to reduce overweight and obesity, to prevent non-communicable diseases, to promote a healthy diet and adequate physical activity for the entire population, and to reduce the consumption of sugary foods, especially among young children.
