Kyrgyzstan has no system for providing assistance to women victims of violence

There is no assistance system in Kyrgyzstan, and a victim of sexual violence is forced to independently seek help, medicines, be examined for HIV / AIDS, and even undergo an abortion. Deputy Kamila Talieva stated at a meeting of the Council for Women, Children and Gender Equality Affairs under the Speaker of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan.

According to UNDP, the Council adopted an action plan to advance the rights and opportunities of women and children for 2023-2024.

«The number of facts of violence against women and children is growing every day. Violence is a problem not only for women, it is a problem for the whole society. We need to find the root cause of violence, investigate and solve this problem in the bud. There is an urgent need to carry out an inventory of legislation and develop advanced laws that will protect women and children,» Kamila Talieva said.

During the meeting, members of the secretariat of the Council proposed creation of a committee for the protection of the rights of women and children under the President of the Kyrgyz Republic.

«The issue of violence needs to be addressed at the level of the president of the country. The situation is getting worse every day, all measures should be developed in an accelerated mode,» said Nazgul Turdubekova, Chairwoman of the Child Rights Defenders’ League Public Foundation.

The Executive Director of the Agency for Social Technologies, Zulfiya Kochorbaeva, believes that the Council should focus on legislative initiatives and promote the adoption of laws against gender-based violence, as well as on the control function of the Parliament on the execution of gender legislation.

«It is necessary through the adoption of new special measures to ensure the broad representation of women in political positions in all state bodies, to increase the participation of male deputies in the work of the Council in order to increase awareness of violence, equality and ensure the adoption of advisory laws,» she added.
