Government of Kazakhstan lowers fuel prices

The government of Kazakhstan has lowered prices for liquefied gas and gasoline. Local media outlets report.

The maximum prices for liquefied gas in Aktobe, Atyrau and Mangistau regions were set at 50 tenge per liter (in remote areas — 55 tenge); in Shymkent, East Kazakhstan, Zhambyl, West Kazakhstan, Kyzylorda and Turkestan regions — 60 tenge per liter (in remote areas — 65 tenge).

The price of gas in Almaty was set at 65 tenge per liter, in Nur-Sultan, Akmola, Almaty, Kostanai, Karaganda, Pavlodar, North Kazakhstan regions — 70 tenge per liter (in remote areas — 75 tenge).

The prices were set for 180 days.

In addition, gasoline prices were temporarily limited. AI 80 will cost not more than 89 tenge per liter, AI 92 and AI 93 — 182 tenge per liter, AI 95 — 215 tenge per liter. The maximum prices for diesel are set at 260 tenge; in Akmola, Aktobe, East Kazakhstan, West Kazakhstan, Kostanai and North Kazakhstan regions, in other regions — 240 tenge per liter.

«A ban has been imposed on the export of large and small ruminants (for six months), potatoes and carrots (for three months). It is noted that this was done to stabilize food prices. It is also promised to impose a temporary moratorium on the increase in tariffs for utilities,» the media report.

Mass protests in Kazakhstan began in the first days of January 2022. Residents of Zhanaozen and Aktau in Mangistau region opposed the sharp rise in prices for liquefied gas. Protests began in other cities of the republic. On January 4-5, clashes with security forces occurred in Almaty, the police used tear gas and stun grenades. The authorities turned off the Internet, and some TV channels temporarily stopped broadcasting.

The government resigned. The Chairman of the Security Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan was replaced, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev became a new chairman instead of Nursultan Nazarbayev.

The president declared a state of emergency in the country on January 5. On the night of January 6, the head of Kazakhstan held a meeting of the Security Council, at which he called the situation in the republic «undermining the integrity of the state». He said that he asked the CSTO for help «in overcoming the terrorist threat.» The CSTO Collective Security Council decided to send peacekeeping troops to Kazakhstan.
