SCNS: Pre-trial proceedings on journalistic investigation continue

An interdepartmental investigation group conducts pre-trial proceedings registered by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Kyrgyzstan under Articles 39 and 130 (attempted murder) of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic. The State Committee for National Security reported.

Deputies of the Parliament Altynbek Sulaimanov, Duishen Torokulov, ex-deputy Shirin Aitmatova, and former deputy chairman of the Customs Service Raiymbek Matraimov have been interrogated as witnesses within the case.

«After investigative actions with participation of the ex-consul of the Kyrgyz Republic in Istanbul city (Turkey) Erkin Sopokov, he was placed in a pre-trial detention center of the State Committee for National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic. Azattyk reporters Mukhamedali (Ali) Toktakunov and Ydyrys Isakov were summoned for interrogation as witnesses in the case. To ensure a comprehensive and objective investigation, all necessary investigative actions are carried out. We will constantly inform the public about the progress of the investigation,» the State Committee for National Security informed.

A journalistic investigation into smuggling and corruption at the Customs caused a massive public outcry. The publication says that unknown persons repeatedly threatened a Chinese businessman Aierken Saimaiti with murder in Kyrgyzstan, so he was forced to flee to Turkey. He was shot dead there.

The Prosecutor General’s Office opened a criminal case and entrusted an interdepartmental investigation group with the investigation.

Journalists have already published the second part of their investigation.
