Akhmatbek Keldibekov, the ex-speaker of the Kyrgyzstan’s Parliament, won a court case against Asia-News Kyrgyz-language media and one of its journalists Aslan Saparbayev. One of the representatives of the former deputy, Shairbek Mamatoktorov, told 24.kg news agency.
According to him, Akhmatbek Keldibekov initially did not intend to sue Asia-News and offered to come to an agreement if the media publishes a refutation and apologizes for its articles discrediting the honor and dignity of the former parliament member.
«However, the management of the news outlet and the journalist did not agree. Akhmatbek Keldibekov was forced to go to court. As far as I know, the court partially granted the application and sentenced Asia-News and the journalist to pay one million soms as compensation for moral damage,» said Shairbek Mamatoktorov.
The trial took place in the Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek. The defendant’s party is not satisfied with the decision and will appeal to a higher court.
