Torture Prevention Center employees not allowed to visit Azimzhan Askarov

Employees of the National Center for Torture Prevention were not allowed to visit the sentenced to life in prison human rights activist Azimzhan Askarov. The head of the organization Nurdin Sulaimanov informed 24.kg news agency.

According to him, the deputy chief of the remand prison 1, where Azimzhan Askarov is kept, has been replaced recently, and the representatives of the National Center were allowed to visit Askarov at the request of the new deputy head. «We received information that Azimzhan Askarov was seriously ill. And I sent the staff to check his state of health, whether he was receiving treatment, whether a doctor saw him and what medicines he needed. They denied the visit. This is a gross violation. We appealed to the Prosecutor General’s Office to bring this deputy head to criminal responsibility for obstructing the implementation of our activities,» Nurdin Sulaimanov said.

Recall, after the revision of the criminal case against Azimzhan Askarov, the judiciary of the Chui Regional Court sentenced him to life in prison, thereby upholding the verdicts of all the courts, including the Supreme Court. Thus, Kyrgyzstan ignored the recommendations of the UN Committee for the Protection of Human Rights, to which the lawyers of Azimzhan Askarov earlier addressed.

The prisoner is accused of inciting ethnic hatred and murder of a policeman during the 2010 June events in the south of the country.
