Kyrgyzstan strengthens emergency preparedness

A tabletop simulation exercise was held in Bishkek, organized by the WHO Country Office in the Kyrgyz Republic jointly with the WHO Regional Office for Europe. The exercise scenario was dedicated to an emergency situation — a mudflow and a simultaneous outbreak of a zoonotic disease.

According to the organizers, representatives of various sectors took part in the event, including specialists from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Veterinary Service, the Border Service, doctors and others.

Such exercises help to practice actions in advance, establish communication between services, understand weaknesses and eliminate them before a real emergency occurs. This allows to learn how to act quickly and correctly in a real emergency, saving lives and reducing the consequences. The country’s readiness for natural disasters and zoonoses is also increased. Preparation is not theory, but a real contribution to human safety.

The exercises became an important step in strengthening the One Health approach, which takes into account the relationship between the health of people, animals and the environment.

It was previously reported that a record number of mudflows were registered in Kyrgyzstan in 2024, some of which resulted in casualties.
