EC delegation visits former uranium production sites in Mailuu-Suu

The delegation of the European Commission, headed by the Minister of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic Boobek Azhikeev, visited the sites of the former uranium production in Mailuu-Suu. The press service of the ministry reported.

During the visit, the delegation representatives assessed the progress of reclamation works financed by the EBRD, where the Ministry of Emergency Situations acts as a beneficiary. These works are aimed at eliminating the consequences of uranium mining, which ceased in 1968, but left 23 radioactive tailing dumps and 13 waste dumps.

«Over the past years of active work, Kyrgyzstan has achieved tangible progress in stabilizing hazardous sites. The European Union has allocated more than €40 million to support the reclamation of uranium sites in both the Kyrgyz Republic and Uzbekistan, which is an important step towards eliminating environmental and sanitary risks,» the statement says.

These activities are expected to improve the environmental situation and safety for both local residents and neighboring countries.
