Artist and designer Aida Sulova, who lives in New York (USA), created a Kyrgyz version of Barbie and named her Jamila. She told about it on social media.
According to the designer, its image was taken from the main character of the story of the same name by the national writer of Kyrgyzstan Chingiz Aitmatov.
«Barbie Jamila is my Kyrgyz Barbie fantasy. There are so many wonderful Kyrgyz women and I wish I had more time and resources to make them all,» she said.
Aida Sulova admitted that she spent her childhood in the steppes of Kazakhstan. Her father worked there.
As the artist told, once he was presented with a cow named Maya.
«Of all the «toys», I remember Maya, as well as a gray stuffed monkey, and a metal constructor with screwdrivers. For me, playing with dolls is a foreign experience. Designing a costume for the controversial Barbie was a challenge until I saw Barbie from the «Representation» series,» she wrote.
