Rosatom Corporation plans to allocate 2.2 billion rubles to Kyrgyzstan for reclamation of five tailing dumps. Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic Azamat Mambetov told journalists.
According to him, an intergovernmental programme «Recultivation of territories of states affected by uranium mining» is being implemented. As part of the first phase, reclamation of tailing dumps in Kadzhi-Sai village in Issyk-Kul region and Min-Kush village in Naryn region is nearing completion.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan and Rosatom plan to complete the second phase by December 31, 2023, and to continue cooperation in bringing former mining facilities in Kyrgyzstan to a safe radiation and environmental condition.
«It is planned to continue work in this direction. We are planning to reclaim tailing dumps in Osh, Jalal-Abad and Batken regions,» Azamat Mambetov said.
According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, there are 92 disposal sites for toxic and radioactive substances in Kyrgyzstan. At least 36 of them are located in Mailuu-Suu. Twenty-three of the tailing dumps contain uranium elements, while the others contain the remains of a number of radioactive rocks, heavy metals and cyanide. The total volume of toxic and hazardous substances is 2.9 million cubic meters.
