Batukaev’s case: Supreme Court upholds Almazbek Atambayev's sentence

Panel of judges of the Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan heard a criminal case on the illegal release of a crime boss Aziz Batukaev.

Coming out of the deliberation room, the presiding judge read out a ruling, according to which sentences of two previous instances against the former president Almazbek Atambayev and the other defendants were upheld.

According to a lawyer Sergei Slesarev, the Supreme Court changed the sentence of the former prosecutor general Indira Dzholdubaeva. She was found guilty but left unpunished.

The Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek sentenced Almazbek Atambayev to 11 years in prison, former prosecutor general Indira Dzholdubaeva to a fine of 5 million soms. Kalybek Kachkynaliev, a former adviser to the head of the State Penitentiary Service, was sentenced to two years in prison. Due to the fact that his term of detention has expired, he was released in the courtroom. Academician Abdukhalim Raimzhanov was found guilty, but due to the expiry of the statute of limitations, he was not imposed a punishment.

The Bishkek City Court upheld the sentence. The Supreme Court overturned all verdicts of the previous instances and remanded the case for a new trial.
