Five people with botulism hospitalized in Batken region

A case of foodborne botulism with five victims was registered in Kadamdzhai district of Batken region. Press center of the Ministry of Health of Kyrgyzstan reported.

All the victims were hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the General Medical Practice Center of Kadamdzhai.

«The condition of three victims is assessed as extremely serious. They are on a ventilator, the condition of two others is serious. They are currently receiving the necessary treatment. Clinical materials were taken from all the victims for laboratory testing,» the ministry said.

During a preliminary epidemiological investigation, it was established that the victims ate home-made canned vegetables on the eve of hospitalization.

Botulism is an acute food poisoning that occurs as a result of eating foods contaminated with botulism and containing botulinum toxin. The nervous system is affected. The causative agent of botulism is the anaerobic bacillus Clostridium botulinum, which can develop without oxygen. Botulism mortality in cases of untimely seeking medical help reaches 70 percent.
