The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in Kyrgyzstan is about 49 percent. Such data were presented today at the presentation of the results of the study «Nutritional status of children and women.»
According to the study, more than 30 percent of children aged six months to five years old in Talas, Issyk-Kul and Naryn regions also suffer from anemia.
Mild forms of anemia can manifest as fatigue, weakness, and poor performance.
More severe forms increase the risk of maternal and neonatal death, preterm birth, and delayed child development.
To solve the problem, it is recommended to introduce an anemia control program, improve the implementation of wheat flour fortification program, and promote the consumption of iron-rich foods (meat, dark leafy greens and legumes).
In Talas, Issyk-Kul and Naryn regions, it is advised to consider the possibility of free distribution of iron among children aged 6-24 months and pregnant women.
