Akylbek Japarov urges universities to contribute to economy of Kyrgyzstan

«Nowadays, higher education institutions should not only provide education, but also contribute to the development of the country, taking on the role of a flagship in political, economic, cultural and social areas,» Akylbek Japarov, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, said speaking at the World Forum of Rectors on the topic «Role of Universities in Building the National Innovation Ecosystem».

He recalled that the forum participants will discuss the most pressing issues of the development of the global ecosystem, sustainable, inclusive development of the country, digitalization of the state, development of a green economy, development of the country in social, economic and environmental aspects.

«History shows that, at all times, the role of universities in the historical, cultural, socio-economic development of society has been always significant. The role of universities as creators of present and future knowledge cannot be overestimated. Economic growth based on knowledge and innovation is the road to prosperity and happiness!» Akylbek Japarov said.

The head of the Cabinet noted that the role of distance education, blended hybrid learning is increasing. Borders between universities and countries disappear. One can study anywhere in the world using modern digital platforms. And, of course, the concept of lifelong learning and inclusive education is developing.

«Higher education should change in line with the demands of the times. Digitalization allows learning from anywhere, challenging the concept of time and space in the world of education. Hybrid learning allows for immersive and experiential learning, enabling students to apply concepts learned in the classroom to the real world. Domestic universities are faced with the task of assisting in the innovative and sustainable development of the country. We rely on human resources, the so-called soft capital,» Akylbek Japarov stressed.

He also said that the country’s leadership initiated several decisions to create favorable conditions for the development of the country’s human resources in the formation of a new generation of highly qualified and competitive fellow citizens. The salaries of educators have been increased, the autonomy of the five universities has been expanded in management, funding and academic aspects. In addition, the legislative framework for education and science has been revised to ensure the full-fledged innovative development of educational organizations.

To date, there are 78 higher educational institutions in Kyrgyzstan, where more than 230,000 students study.
