Number of rallies increases in Bishkek

An impressive number of peaceful assemblies — 64.9 percent — have been held in Bishkek in 2021. Coordinator of Kylym Shamy human rights center Gulshaiyr Abdirasulova announced today at a round table discussion on the topic: «Presentation of results of monitoring the provision of the right of Kyrgyzstanis to peaceful assemblies in 2020-2021.»

According to her, the number of peaceful assemblies organized by ordinary citizens increased by 9.8 percent last year. But the number of rallies organized by the parties has significantly decreased by 10.1 percent.

Gulshaiyr Abdirasulova noted that the number of spontaneous rallies also reduced. Basically, all the rallies were held after filing a notification to the local self-government bodies.

She stressed that most socio-economic rallies develop into political ones, since there is no corresponding reaction from the authorities to the demands put forward. «It’s not good, because people come out with a problem and don’t get an answer that it will be solved. Therefore, they come to Bishkek from the regions,» the human rights activist said.

She also added that, compared to 2020, the number of restrictions on peaceful assemblies was reduced in 2021.
