Cosmodrome in Naryn: Kyrgyz “Elon Musk” plans future rocket launches

Founder of NanoSpace research and educational center Ulan Salamatov told 24.kg news agency about plans to develop rocket engineering in Kyrgyzstan and eventually build the country’s own cosmodrome in At-Bashy district of Naryn region.

According to him, the NanoSpace team is already developing civilian rocket systems and working on launching rockets into the stratosphere. At present, rockets created by the center’s specialists are capable of reaching altitudes of up to two kilometers.

NanoSpace hopes to carry out its first stratospheric rocket launch later this year. At the same time, the organization is preparing specialists for the sector. Next year, one of the country’s universities is expected to open a faculty dedicated to rocket engineering.

Ulan Salamatov said specialists had conducted preliminary studies of various locations across Kyrgyzstan and concluded that At-Bashy could become one of the most suitable sites for building a future cosmodrome.

Among the advantages cited are the area’s low population density and high-altitude plateau location, which could reduce rocket fuel consumption by up to 15 percent during launches.

According to Salamatov, the idea of building a cosmodrome may currently seem futuristic, but the project is being viewed as a long-term goal that could be realized within the coming decades.
