The Kyrgyz Republic maintains its status as a country with a young population, with children aged 17 and under accounting for 37 percent of the total population. The National Statistical Committee reported.
According to it, as of the beginning of 2026, the total number of young citizens of Kyrgyzstan reached 2,730 million.
Regions with the highest number of children
By gender, the demographic situation shows a stable balance:
- boys — 1,403 million (51 percent);
- girls — 1,327 million (49 percent).
Compared to the beginning of 2025, the total child population of the republic has increased by 15,000, or 0.6 percent. The majority of young citizens live in the regions: 63 percent of children live in rural areas, and 37 percent in cities.
The National Statistical Committee recorded the highest proportion of the younger generation in Batken, Jalal-Abad, Osh, Talas, and Naryn regions (from 38 to 43 percent of the total regional population). In Bishkek, the figure was lowest, at only 24 percent.
Age groups and birth rate
By age, children at the beginning of 2026 were distributed as follows:
- 38 percent were children under 7 years old (1.45 million people);
- 46 percent were schoolchildren aged from 7 to 14 (1,258 million people);
- 16 percent were teenagers aged from 15 to 17 (427,000 people).
Number of children born
In 2025, more than 140,000 children were born in the country (almost 72,000 boys and more than 68,000 girls). Women aged from 20 to 29 traditionally account for the peak birth rate (55 percent of all births).
Strain on social infrastructure
Growing demographic indicators require the constant expansion and modernization of social infrastructure. By the end of 2025, more than 2,000 kindergartens were operating in the country, accommodating over 276,000 children.
At least 1,600,000 children are currently enrolled in 2,400 day schools in the country. The government continues to systematically increase capital investment in the construction of new educational institutions. For example, in Bishkek alone, 20 new schools are being built and are scheduled to open this year.
