TikTok not blocked in Kyrgyzstan to date

TikTok is not blocked and continues to work as before . Altynbek Toktorbaev, Chairman of the Service for Regulation and Supervision of the Communications Industry of the Ministry of Digital Development of Kyrgyzstan, said at a press conference.

According to him, on August 30, 2023, a letter was received from the Ministry of Culture about blocking TikTok. The ministry received many appeals to close the social media platform. People complained that there was a lot of information on the platform that could have a negative impact on young children.

«To block TikTok, we need a court decision. If there is one, there is a technical possibility to block it. There is information that now the developers of this application and the Ministry of Culture are negotiating to settle the issue,» Altynbek Toktorbaev said.

The Ministry of Culture sent a request to block TikTok to the Ministry of Culture in late August. The decision caused a wide resonance both in society and in the expert community. There was an opinion that the ban of the popular social media app will aggravate the problems of small and medium-sized businesses, damage freedom of speech and democracy in Kyrgyzstan, and reduce opportunities for self-expression among young people.
