Chairman of Cabinet Akylbek Japarov visits uranium tailings

The Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan Akylbek Japarov visited uranium tailings in Min-Kush village, Dzhumgal district as part of his working trip to Naryn region.

There are four uranium tailings in Min-Kush village: Taldy-Bulak, Tuyuk-Suu, Kak and Dalneye.

Work on reclamation of the tailings is underway. Reclamation work at Kak is planned to be completed this year, and Taldy-Bulak is being transferred to Dalneye tailing dump, this work will be completed by the end of 2023. Waste from Tuyuk-Suu is also planned to be transferred to Dalneye.

Local residents expressed concern that uranium waste would be transported along the road used by the villagers.

Akylbek Japarov assured them that «the work on the evacuation of uranium waste will be carried out strictly within the framework of existing rules and requirements.» He also noted that the final decision on the evacuation of the tailings would be made taking into account the interests and opinions of local residents to ensure their radiation safety.

Reclamation of uranium tailings in Min-Kush village has been approved as an interstate target program between Rosatom State Atomiс Energy Corporation and the Kyrgyz Republic within the framework of the EAEU.
