About a thousand children are adopted annually in Kyrgyzstan. The head of the Department for Development of Services for Families and Children of the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Migration Bakyt Todogeldiev told 24.kg news agency.
According to him, almost 98 percent of them are adopted by relatives and only 2 percent (about 20 children) are adopted by third parties through the state data bank.
«We have a large flow of migration. Sometimes parents take citizenship of another state, while children remain in Kyrgyzstan. There are different situations, that’s why there are such figures,» Bakyt Todogeldiev explained.
He noted that the database contains about 300 children under the age of 18 to be adopted. At the same time, there are about 800 people who want to take care of a child.
«Some candidates leave due to the fact that they did not renew the necessary documents in a timely manner. A police clearance certificate, for example, is only valid for three months,» the official added.
Three minors were transferred for international adoption in 2022.
