At least 122 cases of bacterial meningitis were registered in Kyrgyzstan for 11 months of 2023, which is 2.4 times more than a year earlier. Bulletin of the Department of Disease Prevention and State Sanitary and Epidemiological Supervision says.
According to it, 15 people died from meningococcal infection.
More than half of the cases occur in children under 14. High rates are registered in Bishkek and Osh, as well as in Chui region.
«According to long-term analysis, an increase in the incidence of meningococcal infection is expected in the future, since the republic is characterized by cyclical rises with a frequency of 8-12 years. The last rise was observed in 2013, and the peak incidence was registered in 2015 (394 cases). In 2021, only 16 cases were reported, but since 2022 there has been an increase again,» the bulletin says.
