Criminal case against Askar Akayev dismissed

The criminal case against former president of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akayev has been dismissed. The head of the Department of International Legal Cooperation of the Prosecutor General’s Office Asylbek Akmatov told 24.kg news agency.

According to him, within the framework of the criminal case related to the development of Kumtor mine, the former head of state was charged with complicity in abuse of power or official position, negligence in concluding a general agreement with Cameco company in 1992 and restructuring Kumtor project in 2003.

«The criminal prosecution of Askar Akayev has been terminated due to the expiration of the statute of limitations for bringing the person to criminal liability,» Asylbek Akmatov said.

The former president Askar Akayev came to the capital several times. During his visit to the country, he was interrogated at the State Committee for National Security. Then the former head of state entered into a plea bargain and gave confessions in the criminal case on Kumtor. The second time he was also interrogated by the security services on the Kumtor case.
