The Parliament of Kyrgyzstan received a letter from Askar Akayev on returning the status of ex-president to him on September 3. The letter was sent for consideration to the Committee on Constitutional Legislation, State Structure, Judicial, Legal Issues and Regulations of the Parliament.
During the consideration of the issue, deputy Gulya Kozhokulova proposed to create a temporary commission to study the issue and make a reasoned decision.
Her colleague Zhanarbek Akayev expressed his objection, noting that the public will not understand if the request of the fugitive president is satisfied by the Parliament.
The public’s position on this issue is already clear. When Akayev was leading the country, dozens of people were shot dead in Aksy. Patriot Sheraly Nazarkulov, who started a hunger strike in protest, was killed in front of the White House. He gave rise to family-clan rule and made children deputies. One can talk endlessly about Akayev’s shortcomings. And why should we return the status to such a person and keep him in the residence?

As a result, the committee decided to recommend Parliament to reject Askar Akayev’s request to return the status of ex-president to him.
