Maia Sandu wins in second round of Moldovan presidential elections

The second round of presidential elections was held in Moldova last Sunday, November 3. The incumbent head of state, Maia Sandu, declared her victory.

Maia Sandu, who advocates European integration, declared victory in the second round of the presidential elections. The vote counting is not yet over, but her rival, the former Prosecutor General of the country, Alexandr Stoianoglo, no longer has a chance to catch up with her.

Maia Sandu won thanks to the votes of Moldovans living abroad. She thanked her voters in the country and abroad and promised to be the president of all Moldovans.

«Moldova, you have won! No one lost in our vote for a decent future... I heard your voice — both those who supported me and those who voted for Mr. Stoianoglo. I promise to be the president of all of you,» local media quote Maia Sandu as saying.

As of 3.30 a.m. local time, when votes from 98.9 percent of polling stations had been processed, Maia Sandu had received more than 55 percent of the votes, Stoianoglo — less than 45 percent.

Votes from polling stations abroad are processed last, but the numerous Moldovans living in Europe overwhelmingly support the incumbent president.
