Ex-president of Moldova detained for 72 hours in treason case

Former president of Moldova Igor Dodon was detained as part of a criminal case initiated under four articles of the Criminal Code, including treason. Spokesperson for the Prosecutor General’s Office Marianna Kerpek told journalists.

«Investigation is ongoing. The house and some premises belonging to Igor Dodon have been searched. He was detained for 72 hours. In total, searches are carried out in 12 premises. Real estate owned by intermediaries is being inspected. The investigation is being carried out as part of a criminal case initiated under the articles «Passive corruption», «Obtaining of funding by a political party from a criminal organization», «Illicit enrichment» and «Treason,» Kerpek said.

Earlier, the acting Prosecutor General of Moldova Dumitru Robu ordered to launch a criminal prosecution on suspicion of corruption against the ex-president Igor Dodon because of the videos that appeared in the public space in the summer of 2020, in particular, the video recording of the June 2019 meeting of Igor Dodon with the leader of the Democratic Party Vladimir Plahotniuc. The video, filmed in the office of the Democratic Party, shows that Plahotniuc is handing Dodon a large black package, which they call a «bag». It is obvious that the «bag» contains money to finance the Socialist Party, which was then led by Dodon.
