Askarov's wife appeals to UN Committee on Elimination of Racial Discrimination

The wife of human rights activist Azimzhan Askarov, sentenced to life term in Kyrgyzstan, made a speech at a meeting of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The human rights activist Aziza Abdirasulova told 24.kg news agency.

Hadicha Askarova handed over an open appeal to the members of the committee. She recalled that in January 2017 the Chui Regional Court upheld the life term sentence to Azimzhan Askarov, despite the decision of the UN Human Rights Committee, which in April 2016 recommended the authorities of Kyrgyzstan to immediately release him.

Earlier, Hadicha Askarova appealed to the President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbai Jeenbekov. In a letter, which she sent by regular mail, she asked the head of state to send the case of her husband and the other seven convicted along with him to an independent examination. In case of revealing violations of the law, she asked to hand over the case for an investigation to other investigators and other judges.
