1,100 refugees live in Kyrgyzstan

Deputy Ombudsman of Kyrgyzstan Albert Kolopov met with the head of the UNHCR National Office Ivan Saleyeu to discuss issues of ensuring the rights of refugees living in Kyrgyzstan.

According to Ivan Saleyeu, 1,100 people, who need to obtain a refugee status, live in the republic.

The problems of such persons with employment, access to education, medicine and other social services were voiced at the meeting. According to the law, the documents of persons wishing to obtain refugee status are considered by state bodies within a year.

Ivan Saleyeu added that the situation with the detention of stateless persons who have applied for refugee status for illegal border crossing is of concern.

UNHCR is ready to assist in building the capacity of the staff of the Ombudsman’s office in working with asylum seekers and refugees.
