Prosecutor General's Office ready to review case against Omurbek Tekebayev

Criminal case against the ex-MP Omurbek Tekebayev should be reviewed upon newly discovered evidence. Deputy Bakhadyr Suleimanov said at a meeting of the Parliament.

Deputies consider the report of the Prosecutor General Otkurbek Dzhamshitov on the state of law in Kyrgyzstan in 2018 and on the work of the prosecutor’s office.

According to him, the citizen of Russia, Leonid Maevsky, on whose testimony the charges against Omurbek Tekebayev were brought, was arrested in Russia for fraud. In this regard, according to the deputy, there is a need to review the case.

The head of the supervisory body replied that the criminal case was sent to the Supreme Court due to new circumstances.

«According to the new Criminal Code, the parties may file a petition for review of the case. Case of Omurbek Tekebayev was sent to the Supreme Court. Within the framework of the law, we are ready to review it,» said Otkurbek Dzhamshitov.

Omurbek Tekebayev and Duishenkul Chotonov were sentenced to eight years in prison with confiscation of property. The courts of all instances found them guilty of corruption.

In November, the Tverskoy Court of Moscow arrested the former deputy of the State Duma, the main witness in Tekebayev — Chotonov case, a businessman Leonid Maevsky. He was accused of extorting $ 37.5 million for non-proliferation of defamatory information. Leonid Maevsky faces up to 15 years in prison. In this regard, the defendants also intend to insist on the speedy review of their case.
