The Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan intends to install a drip irrigation system around Issyk-Kul Lake. The project is aimed at the rational use of the region’s water resources. Erlist Akunbekov, Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, told reporters.
According to him, seasonal fluctuations in the lake’s water level are observed in Issyk-Kul region, and a downward trend is expected in the long term.
The minister, citing meteorological service data, clarified that the water level in Issyk-Kul Lake has dropped by approximately 47 centimeters over the past 10 years.
«We have projects, including the implementation of a drip irrigation system around Issyk-Kul Lake,» Erlist Akunbekov said.
He also noted that special attention will be paid to the treatment and reuse of wastewater, including water from resorts and car washes.
Measures are planned to limit the use of drinking water by car washes and to transition to closed-loop water circulation systems.
«There is enormous potential for horticulture in Issyk-Kul region. We want to encourage farmers to develop this sector,» the official added.
Starting in 2028, the region is expected to gradually transition to drip irrigation systems, which should reduce pressure on Issyk-Kul’s water resources and help stabilize the environmental situation.
